A critical chain is the one that takes the longest time to execute and is made up of critical tasks that are necessary for project completion.
The critical chain method focuses on the resources required to fulfill the activities in every chain. This is in contrast to CPM and other older methodologies that concentrated on the task and the time it took to complete them.
Traditional methods ignored the fact that resource constraints can cause delays in any project, thereby affecting the originally planned project end date. This resulted in many projects running behind schedule since the contingencies that cropped up along the way were not well accounted for in terms of time allocation.
Origin of the Critical Chain Management Method
CCM is the creation of Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt, a business management guru who introduced several project management philosophies. He developed the critical chain method using algorithms derived from the Theory of Constraints (TOC).
The TOC is a philosophy Dr. Goldratt presented in his 1984 book, The Goal, aimed at helping businesses achieve their goals. In 1997, he adapted the concept of the TOC into project management, which resulted in the critical chain method.
The introduction of ideologies contained in the TOC filled the gaps left in earlier methods. Critical chain management for project scheduling does away with wasteful techniques such as multitasking. It also prevents student syndrome and Parkinson’s law, which were behind most delays in projects that applied CPM.
